Lawn Care Tips for Your East Omaha Lawn

East Omaha Lawn Care: Tips to Follow in the Spring

Spring is probably the most critical season when it comes to looking after your yard. After the brutally cold winter months, your lawn is crying out for some TLC. As the days become longer and the grass starts growing, it’s time to start giving your lawn some love again. It's best to do this as early as possible to allow it to gain the most potential.

Below are our top tips for maintaining your lawn in Spring to give it the best results.

1.      Mowing:   Once the grass begins to grow, you're going to have to start mowing it. It is important to note that when mowing your lawn in Spring, you should set your lawnmower height accordingly. An ideal rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 off your grass. Not doing this can cause your lawn to become stressed, so we recommend you do a little frequently.

2.      Feeding:  You must feed your lawn from the beginning of Spring. This is the time your lawn is growing at a fast rate and, like any other living thing, needs the right nutrients to become healthy. Healthy lawns result in thicker and green grass.

3.      Topdressing:  If your grass has become uneven, then laying out top dressing onto low areas will fix this. 1 to 3 kg per square meter will be enough when brushed into the surface of the lawn, especially in small spaces. It is also best to perform this when the lawn is relatively dry. It can also aid in drainage and breakdown of thatch.

4.      Troubleshooting moss:  If moss is affecting your lawn, you'll need to remove it as quickly as possible at the beginning of Spring. You can easily purchase moss killer products to perform this. Once the moss is dead, you can scarify it. If the removal of moss creates some thin areas in your lawn, it might be worth overseeding it.

5.      Scarification:  Scarification lessens the build-up of dead grass and roots. All of which can increase the stress to your lawn. Scarification can be carried out by using a rake and pulling vigorously through the grass. There are electric and petrol options which can be hired from local garden stores.

6.       Aeration:  Areas your lawn with a spiking machine or even a fork. IF you don't own either of these, then it can be purchased or hired from local garden stores. This can help improve drainage, relieve compaction, and circulate more air into the roots creating a healthier lawn.

7.      Treating weed grasses:  Unwanted weed grasses can start to appear in your lawn at the beginning of Spring. They are noticeable as they are different from the rest of the grass. These can be eradicated by cutting out the plant and its root and replacing it with top dressing.

8.      Cut down on vegetation:  Lawns like all plants rely solely on light and water to grow. Sometimes surrounding shrubbery can leave little to no water left for the grass, so it is occasionally worth cutting back during Spring. In return, it can allow your lawn to gain enough light and water.
